Steps to Take Immediately After an Accident

Being involved in a car accident can be stressful and overwhelming. However, taking the right steps immediately afterward can help ensure that you are covered and protected.

Here are tips we give to our clients!

1. Ensure Safety

  • Safety is our number one priority. Make sure that you and others involved are all okay. Get immediate help if necessary.

  • If it's possible, move out of the way for safety. If traffic is heavy, you don't want to be standing in the middle of it with your car. Rather, move to the side prevent further issues. Take photos and videos immediately and tell law enforcement where your vehicle was moved from upon calling.

2. Call Emergency Services

  • Ensure you file a report with law enforcement after your car accident. Call the phone number associated with the area to file an accident report.

  • If it's necessary, call for medical assistance. Remember, the most important thing is to take care of injured parties.

3. Document the Scene

  • Take photos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, license plates, and any relevant road signs.

  • Gather information from witnesses, including names and contact details.

  • Make sure all of this information is put in the police report, so both parties have access to it.

4. Exchange Information

  • Exchange contact and insurance information with the other parties involved in the accident.

  • Collect details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance companies, and policy numbers.

5. Give Information

  • Tell the law enforcement everything for the accident. You want to ensure that they write the most accurate report. Remember, you are simply having them document what happened so your insurance can better assist you and understand the extent of the damage.

6. Notify Your Insurance Company

  • Contact the insurance company you are putting the claim through. That may be the person who hit you or your insurance, depending on who is at fault. Give them all of the necessary information. You will need the report number that is filed, photos of the vehicle, and medical information if it's necessary.

7. Seek Medical Attention

  • It's always recommended to get checked out. Sometimes, complications from the accident take hours to arise or are not immediate. Make sure to seek medical attention if you need it and hold onto your records.

8. Keep a Record of Everything

  • Maintain a file with all documents related to the accident, including police reports, medical bills, and correspondence with your insurance company.
